The prelims test is only for qualifying reasons; students must get at least 90 points to pass. The following are the main features of the TNPSC Group 2 Prelims exam:

General Tamil/General English, Aptitude, and Mental Ability Test questions will be at the S.S.L.C. level.
General Studies questions will be at the Degree Standard level.

Candidates must note the following points:

The Group 2 Prelims exam is objective type.
The exam has one paper covering General Tamil/General English, General Studies, and Aptitude & Mental Ability.
General Studies are based on Degree Level, while other subjects follow SSLC standards.
Candidates may select General Tamil or General English as their language subjects.
The exam consists of a total of 200 questions:
75 questions in General Studies
25 questions in Aptitude & Mental Ability
100 questions in language subjects.
Language questions should be attempted in the respective languages, while other subjects can be answered in English or Tamil.
There is no negative marking in the exam.
The total duration of the exam is 180 minutes.

Candidates who pass the preliminary examination advance to the mains exam. The main exam is divided into two parts: Paper I and Paper II. Important points

The Mains exam is descriptive type and will be conducted offline.
It consists of two papers

Paper I is the Tamil Language Test
Paper II is the General Studies Test

Only candidates who obtain the minimum qualifying marks in Paper I will be eligible for Paper II.
Paper II follows Degree standards for its questions.
Only paper II marks will be considered for final selection or progression to the interview stage.
In paper I, all questions are required to be answered in Tamil, excluding those requiring an English translation.
In Paper 2, candidates can choose to write the exam in either Tamil or English.
